Dia de los Muertos is a spiritual holiday dating back to the Aztecs, Toltec, and Nahua people. From October 31 to November 2, families celebrate by cleaning cemeteries and creating ofrendas, or altars, filled with photos, favorite foods, drinks, and other items of loved ones who have passed away. These vibrant celebrations involve bright colors, music, food, drinks, and dancing to honor and celebrate the spirits believed to visit during this time.
As a proud Mexican-American, Allie Names grew up creating a Dia de los Muertos ofrenda with her family. She began this fundraiser as a Fred SPCA employee and has graciously continued it as a supporter. Allie will be will be designing a Day of the Dead altar to celebrate the lives of the animals who have passed and left paw prints on our hearts. In creating the altar to celebrate those who shared in our journey, we hope you will join us in raising money for homeless animals who are still on theirs.
Make a gift in memory of your beloved and email socialmedia@fredspca.org a picture of the animal(s) you would like to celebrate on our altar.
Please note, that October 31 will be the last day to get your photos in for us to print. Feel free to come by and see our Día de Los Muertos altar in our lobby on October 31st & November 1st between 12 pm-6 pm.
We welcome those who prefer to bring an in-person donation on those days and place a photo or item on the altar.
