APRIL 2022

The need for adopters, fosters, donations, and support for local shelters and rescues is at a nationwide high. With the cost of living rising, many people are being forced to surrender their loved pets to their municipal shelters. The number of partner shelters that need our help to refrain from euthanizing their population is only increasing each day as the number of owner surrenders also increases. The Fred SPCA's life-saving reach is tethered by the capacity for care and resources that we have available. Our shelter has been experiencing critical capacity, with many dog kennels having to be partitioned into two to double-back animals.

On April 30 for Adopt A Shelter Pet Day we will be opening up our doors to walk-in adoptions! There will be on-site foster sign-ups for animals that are not yet available for adoption and we will have our top (5) dogs and (5) cats fee-waived. Remember, adoption is not your only option with us, so if you are unable to adopt, fostering is a great way to get temporary companionship while saving lives! If you are experiencing financial hardships, the Fred SPCA's People Empowered Through Support Program offers supplemental food through our free Pet Pantry Program. Delivery is available to those who need it to make the program accessible to our community. We also offer low-cost veterinary services through our Fred SPCA Locke Community Medical Center and twice-monthly exam-fee-waived vaccine clinics where you can get your pets up-to-date on vaccines, microchips, testing, and pick up their monthly flea/tick/heartworm preventative! If you are unable to foster, adopt, donate or volunteer - sharing our posts and our services helps us reach more people in need!

NEWS

(-) ONE LESS LEG (+) ONE MORE LIFE SAVED

Pogo came to us from a shelter in SW VA. He had experienced the unfortunate situation of having his rear leg caught in a snare-type trap and attempted to self amputate. Big yikes! Due to the municipal shelters being underfunded and understaffed, he was at risk for euthanasia due to his injuries. A small shelter in a smaller town doesn’t have big funds for a big surgery or the ability to perform this kind of care in-house. Read how our Fred SPCA shelter intake & transfer team and the Fred SPCA Locke Community Medical Center were able to help Pogo!

THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS!

A huge and unwavering cheer to our volunteers! They are the backbone of our operations, often taking on imperative daily tasks that allow our staff to focus on other aspects of the job! Our extraordinary volunteer crew does everything from helping care for the animals, running events, transporting animals, and even admin work! Without them, we would not be able to achieve as much as we do within the community! THANK YOU, volunteers! If you'd like to learn more about volunteer opportunities, sign up today!

HIGHLIGHTS

HEARTWORM PREVENTION

April is Heartworm Awareness Month! The American Heartworm Society states that over 1 million animals in the United States currently have the disease. It only takes one bite from a mosquito to transfer eggs into your dog (or cat!). While infected, dogs can have 30 or more worms living in their heart and lungs. Heartworm is fatal if left untreated and treatment is extraordinarily painful and quite a long process. The best (and cheapest) option to keep your pet safe is monthly heartworm prevention medication! The Fred SPCA Locke Community Medical Center offers affordable preventatives, testing, and in the event of a positive test, treatment. We host twice-monthly vaccine clinics where you can pick up flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives with no appointment and no exam fee!
